Vintage bikes targeted by thieves

Police are appealing to Counties Manukau motorbike fanatics to "band together" to help out a fellow enthusiast targeted by thieves.
A 77-year-old Hamilton bike addict is understandably distraught after the theft of his rare, antique motorcycles, Hamilton police constable Wayne Shanks says.
It's believed the thieves deliberately targeted the elderly gentleman, he says.
"The thieves have gone to some effort to gain entry to the man's garage and make off with the motorcycles," he says. Gone are a 1928 500cc BSA motorcycle, a 1951 500cc Norton and a 1926 350cc Harley Davidson that was being restored.

Triumph Trident T160

In November 1974 the T150V was succeeded by the much-modified T160. Some of the changes were due to market response to the earlier Tridents, and some were to comply with American safety legislation. With forward-sloping cylinders, electric-start and gearshift moved to the left hand side, NVT were making a last ditch effort to save large scale production and to reduce the gap between the Trident and the Honda CB750. The T160 was manufactured for little more than a year, with production ending in early 1976, after which NVT collapsed completely. In total, 7,211 T160 models were built and sold in 1975.

Vintage motorcycle auction brings more than $4.1 million in winning bids

The vintage motorcycle auction held at the Rio Jan. 12-14 brought in more than $4.1 million in winning bids, the auction company reported Tuesday.
The top seller was a 1910 Flying Merkel restored in the company's bright orange color that fetched $86,800, according to Dallas-based Auctions America by RM.
A high-quality 1926 Cleveland Fowler sold for $76,160. Las Vegas magician Criss Angel watched from the lectern as his "Mindfreak" custom chopper went for $19,040.
Auctions America reported that 82 percent of nearly 500 motorcycles on the auction block were sold. One that did not sell was an 1894 Roper that was predicted to set the record for a motorcycle sold at auction.
Bidders represented 35 states and 10 countries, including Germany, the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

Armstrong Trial Motorcycles

The motorcycle arm of British car components giant Armstrong produced moiocross, trials, road racing and military bikes in the 1980s, after taking over Barton Kngineering and CCM. Most were powered by engines from Rotax of Austria. Armstrong's CF250 road-racer, introduced in 1983, featured a tandem-twin Rotax engine in an innovative twin-spar carbon fibre frame. Niall Mackenzie and Donnie McLeod dominated British racing, and scored some impressive results in Grands Prix. Armstrong also built a very successful single-cylinder, four-stroke military bike, rights to which were later sold to Harley-Davidson.

Long before the word “motocross” was even coined, scrambles races started slowly but were active well in the 1930s. Brands like Yamaha and Kawasaki were still in the embryo phase at this time, back then, it was BSA, Triumph, Norton, Matchless from Britain, and a few other European marques that dominated the race tracks. The British pioneered enhancements like swinging fork rear suspension which took them well into the 1950s.

Remember the famous BSA 441cc Victor Special? Originally, a world-class dirt bike! Another historical note, in 1954 (when I was born) BSA was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, producing 50,000 motorcycles per year and importing worldwide!

The first “scrambles races” with motorcycles I ever witnessed was in 1969 on a hot summer Sunday in upstate New York. Andre’s farm in Fishkill, New York was the local dirt bike track, and I remember my father taking my cousin and I at about age 14 to see this exciting event. I can still remember smelling the strong “racing Castrol” in the air which was a concoction added to the gas/oil for higher engine performance.

Back then, two-stroke motorcycles with names like CZ-Jawa, Maico, Ossa, Bultaco, and Husqvarna were the hot bikes to own and race. The Japanese bikes were just coming into the scene. There were a few Triumphs, BSAs and Nortons on the track, mostly ridden by older guys. Compared to the European bikes I mentioned, they appeared heavy and slow... Read more

Michel Rougerie (April 21, 1950 in Montreuil-sous-Bois - May 31, 1981 in Rijeka) was a Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from France. His best year was in 1975 when he won the two races and finished in second place in the 250cc world championship behind his Harley Davidson team-mate Walter Villa. Rougerie actually scored more points than Villa that season, but because only the best six results of the season were counted, he lost the championship. He was killed in 1981 while competing at the Yugoslavian Grand Prix.

Before the production rule went into effect. The gap between Honda’s works bikes and Honda’s production bikes was far greater than any of the other manufacturers. Towards the mid-eighties, the cost for each works Honda was over $200,000.00 per bike. The cost of racing professional AMA motocross in the U.S. was getting out of control and Honda was on a runaway freight train. Although some of the works technology was passed down to the production bikes, most of the secrets on the Honda works bikes remained secrets.

In 1986 when the production rule went into effect, most observers thought the playing field would be even. In reality Honda became even more dominant and up and coming Ricky Johnson went from being a star to a superstar. At the start of the season, each rider received two bikes for the entire season, plus an endless supply of parts. The bike featured here, is the second 250 that Ricky used in 1986. The first bike was destroyed.

At the end of 1986 Honda decided to expand their success to Europe and teamed up with Honda factory rider Eric Geboers from Belgium. They were going to make their first attempt at the 250 World Championship... Read more

Barry Sheene, two time World champion in 1976 and 1977, began his sports career with the Bultaco TSS.

Barry Stephen Frank Sheene MBE (11 September 1950 – 10 March 2003) was a British World Champion Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He became the British 125cc champion aged just 20, and finished second in the World Championships for that class a year later. Sheene won the newly formed Formula 750 European championship for Suzuki in 1973. A spectacular crash at the Daytona 200 in the 1975 season threatened to end his career, breaking his left thigh, right arm, collarbone and two ribs, yet he recovered and was racing again seven weeks afterwards.
In 1973, he won the Formula 750 World Championship. In the 1976 season, he won five 500cc Grands Prix, bringing him the World Championship. He repeated as champion in the 1977 season with six victories... Read more

Via Bonhams : After World War II, postwar U.S. prosperity created a huge market for British bikes and BSA had been a beneficiary. Competition sold bikes, and BSA's off-road and oval track successes with its 500cc single Gold Star kept the firm in the magazine headlines. One of the most publicized races in the country was the Catalina Grand Prix, run on an island course on Catalina off the coast of Southern California. A Gold Star won the 1952 event, leading to a Catalina Gold Star Scrambler being introduced in 1956. The timing was perfect because BSA won the 1956 event after the model had already been introduced.

Graeme Crosby (born in 1955) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from New Zealand. A supremely versatile rider, Crosby holds the distinction of having won the Daytona 200, the Imola 200, the Suzuka 8 Hours, and the Isle of Man TT.

Crosby began his racing career in 1974 in the New Zealand racing scene. In 1976, he made an impression in the Australian Superbike championship. He then left for Europe in 1980 to compete in Britain where he won the Isle of Man Senior TT. By 1980, he had worked his way up to the 500cc road racing world championship on a Suzuki RG 500. Also in 1980, he teamed up with Wes Cooley on a Yoshimura Suzuki to win the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race, and he was the TT Formula One World Champion for Suzuki. After finishing fifth in the 1981 500cc championship - the year in which he was British TT F1 champion - he made a move to the Agostini Yamaha factory racing team. He began the 1982 season by winning the prestigious Daytona 200.

Despite injuries, Crosby still managed second overall in the championship. Frustrated by the internal politics of his race team Crosby quit the Grand Prix circuit after the 1982 season... Read more

Immediately after World War II, as civilian production ramped up & the British economy got going again, the popularity of motorsports, racing of all kinds, was exploding. Auto races captured much of the limelight, but motorcycle racing was enjoying a boom in growth in all directions. While Road Racing had always been popular in Europe & England, it was fairly expensive for the 'Average Joe' & so many young men returning from the War turned to dirt bikes, in one form or another. They were fun, cheap, often nothing more than their commuter bike with the lights removed, and they could be ridden anywhere, out in the boonies. Off-road racing events of all kinds began springing up all over Europe & England and the British motorcycle industry was not long to catch on.

When Tom Lang turns 26 on Monday he'll have been alive for half as long as Murray Williams has been racing motorbikes.

The unlikely pair hope their combination of youth and experience can secure an early birthday present when the Australian Classic Motocross Championships wraps up this Sunday at Crystal Brook.
Mr Lang and Mr Williams, 74, will compete in two sidecar classes during the event, riding a 1981 Norton Wasp 920 and 1965 Triumph Bonneville Ariel 650.
Mr Williams began racing bikes in Woomera back in 1959. Now a 10-time Australian sidecar champion, he has no plans to hang up the helmet.
When he was looking for a passenger for the Championships he found in Mr Lang someone who, despite the age difference, shared an equal passion for vintage motorcycles.

This is one of the more unusual motorcycles that appeared in the recent AMD Championship. Unusual because it’s perfectly rideable, and also because it was the first time a sidecar outfit has competed in Sturgis. ‘Union’ was built by Abnormal Cycles of Italy, a workshop that has come a long way since we featured its BMW café racer over a year ago. The Bernareggio-based company created an Art Deco-inspired sidecar—complete with wood trim—and hooked it up to a 1942 Harley-Davidson Model U.

You might think Pebble Beach weekend is all about cars. It’s not.

Yesterday at The Quail Motor Show, a handful of supremely rare, expensive motorcycles were on display as well.
Included among them were a 1957 Triumph T110 Desert Sled, a 1966 BMW R69/S, and a 1987 Ducati Laguna Seca. The ultimate find was a 1940 Brough Superior 982cc SS100, the last of its kind to leave the Nottingham factory. It’s valued at $350,000 – $400,000.

Vintage bike stolen

A VINTAGE motorcycle worth £33,000 was stolen from a motorbike event at Fordingbridge Recreation Centre on Saturday August 6 between 9.35pm and 10.36pm.

The owners of the Vincent Rapid motorbike were camping on the recreation ground when they were disturbed by engine noise outside their tent. When they looked outside they discovered the valuable machine had been stolen.

Witnesses say they saw a white high-top van leave the site at about 10.30pm and head towards the A338.

Registration number PVX 299, engine number F10 AB/1/2293, frame number RC 4193, was first registered in 1950 although made in 1949. Be aware of any parts offered for sale that may have come from this Vincent.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the van at this time to ring them on 08450 454545.

The 2-stroke KX-250 is no longer sold in the United States due to lack of equipment and need. For the U.S. Market, the KX450F was introduced in 2006 and utilizes a 4-stroke engine developed using Formula One technology.

Gary Nixon (January 25 1941 – August 5 2011) was an American motorcycle racer who, when on Triumph motorcycles, most notably won the A.M.A. Grand National Championship in 1967 and 1968. He was also a former winner of the Daytona 200 motorcycle race on a 500cc Triumph, claiming a victory in the 1967 event. Nixon was also known for his partnership with legendary tuner Erv Kanemoto when they won the 1973 U.S. National Road Racing Championship for Kawasaki. In 1976 he competed at the international level, laying claim to the Formula 750 world championship until international politics denied him that prize. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2003. He last resided in Maryland and participated in vintage motorcycle racing as well as testing motorcycles for the locally produced syndicated public TV automotive review program MotorWeek.

Nixon suffered a heart attack on July 29 2011 and died on August 5 from complications.

The new bosses bought a track, a driving school, a bad schedule and one struggling event. Green Savoree Mid-Ohio, the owners of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, desperately needs to give its one-time signature event an extreme makeover.
Does Ty Pennington know anything about motorcycles? The Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tires certainly requires an overhaul.
The action on the track was never better than a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, it was a box-office dud. Once upon a time, the Superbikes brought tens of thousands to north central Ohio.

The streets and roads were filled with folks on their two-wheeled machines, taking over Lexington, Mansfield, Ontario and parts in-between. Green space in the Esses and elbow room in the paddock were hard to come by. For the last couple of years, that hasn't been the case... Read more

Dick Troutman and Tom Barnes (builder of Lance Reventlow' Scarabs, Pete Brock's Samauri, and the first Chaparrals for Jim Hall) also built some motorbikes. Here are two shots of their 450 Honda engined desert bike. Photos are from the 06/68 Cycle World.

The frame used 4130 steel and all tubes but steering head and swingarm 1.25" x .049" wall, and the swing arm was 1.375" x .095" wall. Engine and shock absorber mounting plates were of .125" sheet. Wet weight - 328 pounds. Engine - 4 speed Honda 450 with 40mm DCOE Weber carb.

Back in the OLD days Dale used to race motorcycles. He raced from 1970 -71 very competitively and a few years after just for fun until the mid 70's. Most of the races after 1972 were marathons and enduros with his dad (who was quite fast by the way :-) He raced a 250cc Bultaco most of the time. It was a very fast and reliable bike for it's time. Here are some pictures taken by a professional photographer (John Ramos) who went from race to race taking pictures of everyone.

Harley-Davidson has dominated the AMA’s Grand National Championship since the inception of the series in 1954. But there was a time in the mid-1980s when Honda took over as the series king—winning four championships in a row.

This is the bike that made it happen: the RS750.

This actually was Honda’s second attempt at building a flat-track bike. The first was the NS750, based on a bored-out version of Honda’s street-going CX500 motor. The company campaigned that bike in 1981 and ’82, and it managed to win one race.

Then Big Red used all it had learned to create the purpose-built RS750 for the next season. The new dirt-tracker made several shakedown runs in the 1983 Grand National Championship, even winning the Du Quoin Mile with rider Hank Scott at the controls.

By 1984, Honda was ready to go championship-hunting in earnest. The company hired ’82 champ Ricky Graham and Bubba Shobert to make a full assault on the title aboard RS750s... Read more

Here are some scans and pics from Mark Frei, who imported the only Ariel HT5 back in 1958 and was competing in trials and enduro Swiss championship.

The Ariel Trials version was developped from the Red Hunter series and was commercialised 1956-59. There were 2 versions available: HT5 with 500ccm and HT3 with 350 ccm. The weight was claimed at 132 kg (dry without liquid). This was clearly ahead of the 150kg of a 350ccm AJS. There was no lighter and more powerful 4 stroke trials bike around. Front wheel was 21 and rear 19(!), ground clearance about 22 cm.

Many of the bikes in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum tell the story of technological progress and innovation. This bike tells the story of one very determined racer.

Donny Schmit carved out his own career path to motocross success. The Minnesota native got off to a good start by winning the 125cc West Region title in the 1986 AMA Supercross Series. But Schmit then struggled in the premier 250cc class, particularly on tighter Supercross circuits.

Recognizing that his skills translated better to outdoor motocross, Schmit dropped out of Supercross to focus on the 125 MX series, losing his Suzuki factory ride in the process. Focusing on a grueling training regimen, he was picked up in 1990 by Team Bieffe Suzuki to race the 125 Motocross World Championship. My first exposure to Motocross was in 1969. I was 13 years old. My Dad (Wally Wallenberg) owned a TV shop and traded an 8 track tape player for a Honda 50cc bike. He immediately rekindled a love affair with motorcycles that he had had back in the 40's before he was in WWII. It didn't take long to outgrow the Honda so he upgraded to a used 1966 Suzuki X-6 Hustler. My Dad's buddy Carroll Erskine was a TV shop customer of his and it turned out he also had a Honda 50 and soon after they became riding buddies.

Not long after my Dad got the Suzuki, Carroll bought a Honda 305 to try and keep pace with my Dad. We spent the summer going to watch the flat track races at Santa Fe Speedway southwest of Chicago in a suburb called Hinsdale. There we got to see all the great local riders from that era like Bart Markel, Roger Reiman and Neil Keen. Santa Fe also hosted a National and we got to see the National champs like Dick Mann and Mert Lawill.

Once a month was TT night and there (aside from the movie The Great Escape) was my first exposure to watching a motorcycle jump, Oh I loved to watch that! I mowed lawns and earned the $75 price for my own Honda 50 as well. I rode that bike everyday in our tiny yard in the city pretending I was racing at Santa Fe... Read more

The collection of old bikes drew hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Capitola Mall parking lot Sunday. Orchestrated by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce, the sixth annual event has been at the mall for four years and is growing, chamber Director Toni Castro said.
